A special Christmas Concert in the cathedral
9 December 2006 7.30pm
Award winning Sunshine Coast choral group the Oriana Concert Choir
join forces with Gold Coast Harpist, Rosemary Hallo, to present Benjamin
Britten’s acclaimed Ceremony of Carols at St John’s Cathedral.
Britten composedthis work in 1942 whilst aboard a cargo ship in the Atlantic ocean, in his cabin next to the refrigeration plant.
The works
unlikely beginnings have done nothing to prevent the undeniable magic and
mystery the piece evokes, and Britten’s masterly arrangements make the most
of the acoustic peculiarities of a church environment.
Music lovers may remember the Oriana Concert Choir from the successful ABC
Classic FM Choir of the year competition where they achieved second place in
the Queensland finals held at the Conservatorium Theatre in July.
This concert will also feature many other beautiful Christmas
works including pieces by John Rutter and traditional carols.
Tickets will be available at the door of the concert which will commence at
7:30. Discounts are available for group bookings by emailing:

In keeping with the spirit of the Taizé community this workshop and prayer service is designed to be an ecumenical venture; members of all denominations are warmly invited to attend.
The workshop has been structured so as to provide participants with an understanding of the context in which the songs of prayer from Taizé emerged. The concept of prayer is explored, particularly in relation to song as prayer. There will also be an opportunity to explore the structure of prayer as used in the Taizé community and ways for adapting this in a local situation. There will be opportunity for both ‘singers’ and ‘instrumentalists’ to explore songs as prayer with their own respective ‘instrument’. Participants will then put together all the information that has been discussed by preparing and participating in a contemplative prayer service using the songs of prayer from Taizé.
People wishing to bring instruments may do so, bear in mind the style of music from Taizé is suitable to instruments like, keyboard, strings, reeds, woodwind; if doing so please advise at time of Booking.
