August 11 – Faith in the Unseen

Faith is the reality of all that is hoped for; faith is the proof of all that is unseen. (Hebrews 11:1)

In the damp, shadowy forests of Australia, a remarkable creature called the blind velvet worm navigates its environment with grace and ease, despite lacking the gift of sight. This extraordinary being relies on its other highly attuned senses to perceive and interact with the world around it, embodying a profound truth about the nature of faith. Just as the blind velvet worm trusts in unseen ways of experiencing reality, we are invited to cultivate a deep and abiding faith in the intangible yet ever-present sacredness that permeates all of creation.

The spiritual principle of faith calls us to trust in the unseen, to believe in the reality of that which lies beyond the grasp of our physical senses. In a world that often places great emphasis on tangible evidence and concrete proof, the blind velvet worm reminds us of the value and power of embracing mystery and trusting in the unseen. By opening our hearts to the possibility of the divine in all things, we begin to see the world through the eyes of faith, recognising the sacred in the ordinary and finding comfort in the knowledge that we are held in love, even in times of uncertainty and change.

Reflection:

1. How can I cultivate a deeper sense of faith in the unseen sacredness that permeates all of creation?

2. In what ways can I learn from the blind velvet worm’s example of trusting in alternative ways of perceiving and navigating the world?

Prayer:

Divine Presence, grant me the courage to embrace the unknown and to trust in the unseen. May my faith be a source of strength and guidance as I navigate the ever-changing landscape of life.
