October 1 – Rivers of Service

So Jesus sat down and called the Twelve over and said, “If any of you wants to be first, you must be the last one of all and at the service of all.” (Mark 9:35)

The Murray-Darling Basin, a vast network of rivers and wetlands spanning southeastern Australia, serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of humble, behind-the-scenes service. Though often unseen and underappreciated, this intricate system quietly supports an astonishing array of life—from the tiniest microorganisms to the majestic river red gums that line its banks. In its unassuming way, the Basin nourishes countless species and communities, exemplifying the profound impact of serving without seeking recognition.

Similarly, Jesus teaches that true greatness lies not in seeking prominence or praise, but in willingly taking the lowest place and serving others. Just as the hidden rivers and wetlands of the Murray-Darling Basin sustain life across a vast region, those who humbly serve behind the scenes, often unnoticed and unacknowledged, can have far-reaching effects that ripple out to touch and transform countless lives. In embracing a life of service, one becomes a conduit for the Divine’s love and grace to flow through them, nourishing and uplifting all they encounter.

Reflection:

  1. How can I cultivate a heart of humble service, focusing on the needs of others rather than my own desire for recognition?

  2. In what hidden ways might my acts of service be making a difference, even if I don’t always see the fruits of my efforts?

Prayer:

Divine Love, guide me to serve with a humble and willing heart. Help me trust that even my unseen acts of service can have a profound impact, just as the hidden rivers nourish the land.
