August 23 – Cushions of Compassion

Because you are God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt compassion, with kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Colossians 3:12)

In the harsh, windswept coastal ridges, a small, unassuming shrub known as the Cushion Bush quietly symbolises the power of compassion. This resilient plant forms soft, silvery-leafed mounds that provide shelter and protection for the small creatures that call these unforgiving landscapes home. The Cushion Bush’s gentle presence is a reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, offering care and support to those in need can make all the difference.

Just as the Cushion Bush is clothed in a soft, protective layer which creates a safe haven for others, we too are called to clothe ourselves with heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. In a world filled with uncertainty, these qualities serve as a beacon of hope and a source of strength for those navigating life’s storms. By embodying these virtues, we become a living testament to the transformative power of love and create a more nurturing environment for all.

Reflection:

1. How can I cultivate a heart of compassion and gentleness, especially towards those facing difficult circumstances?

2. In what ways can I provide shelter and support for others, just as the Cushion Bush does for the creatures in its coastal home?

Prayer:

Divine Source of Compassion, may I be clothed in Your love and grace, so that I may extend heartfelt kindness and gentleness to all I encounter. Guide me in creating a safe haven for those in need, offering them shelter in life’s storms.
